Timing chains do not have a replacment interval. They only need replaced when they break.

I guess I am confusing timing "chains" with timing "belts?" I recall several years ago a timing "belt" broke on my Nissan Maxima resulting in damage to engine.
This begs three additional questions:
1] Clarification: Does my '05 Equinox have a "chain" instead of a "belt?"
2] What is difference between the two ("belts" and "chains"); and
3] If a "chain" breaks, am I facing potential damage to engine?

chevy equinox uses a timming chain. like a bicycle chain but doubled (side by side) belts are used in some vehicles and are made of rubber, aprox 1.5 inch to 2.5 inch wide. with teeth running on the inside. these timming belts last 60-70k. timming chains usually last 150k or more. usually it starts as a noise issue and developes into a poorly running motor long before it breaks. hope this helps........, chevy equinox is known to have bad water pump bearing which makes noises close to a faulty timming chain. good luck
